First version of WPD vs the current design.

Just reminding myself of how far it’s come in 3 years.

Looking for the most potent strain? Need to find some sativa or indicas? Ever wonder if your dealer is making those wacky weed names up?

Check out our Strain Database! Over 800 strains and counting~

Got the random strain widget done. I’m not completely happy with the execution, but I’ll settle for now. Also have an easy way to pull strains for advertisements.

Updates, or as I like to call them, whoopsies

Accordion menu on the front page now slides up and down, rather than becoming bigger and smaller(makes more sense when you see it).

Login looks way more legit now, and I fixed the registration page. The social network connection should work now as well. Benefits to creating an account are shown, like most registration pages. And once you’re logged in, the dropdown login box on the top menu won’t show.

Added titles to the imported tag thumbnails on the front page. You can hover over the #WPD or the random tag thumbnail images and they’ll fade to black and show the title of the post. It should remove some confusion from what people are actually seeing before clicking(without hovering and waiting to see it in a caption).

And as always, small CSS changes I’m sure no one will notice.

What really came out of today was a number of ideas for incredible improvements.

I’d totally forgotten about CSS sprites. I’d used it on every website before, and even in previous iterations, but I was finally reminded by an article on a web design website. It’ll allow all the icons on the website to be loaded in one file, which’ll make hover animations smoother, load times smaller, and raises compatibility levels.

Random strain from the cannabis DB! I’ve got to throw together a quick PHP function to pull a random strain from the DB to display on the sidebar and Tumblr. It will hopefully raise awareness to the fact we have a stocked DB of strains, and how pretty it looks.

Menus are being re-organized more logically. It’s obvious a lot of people are lost on the website, and I don’t blame them, it’s not that easy to find everything. Though I’m not even sure how the structure should look, as I don’t want to lose any focus on the more important sections of the site. Something like that requires meditation, either sober or medicated.

Plenty to do, as always.

And as always, never any funds for progression.

I love running a one-man website on an empty wallet. I really don’t know how I do it.

1000 strains or so

In the Cannabis DB.

Added about 400 tonight with their breeder/seed bank.

Now I’ve gotta find the THC/CBD/CBN content and update each entry with it’s crosses.

Then I have to alter the AJAX to a load-on-demand system so the strain DB doesn’t get overloaded.

And I was able to update the live version with the new UI changes. I’m already refining it more in my mind, but I wanted to get the framework out there so stoner’s get adjusted to it.

But for now, sleep.

Updated the website

With some new changes.

We’ve got a tabbed interface replacing the top “featured article” slider. It’s still there, but now there’s a WPDTV, podcast, and activity stream option. The latter pulls the latest two Wordpress comments, so we can start focusing on community aspect of the website. I’ve had a number of new registrations on the site, especially with the incorporation of the social network APIs.

Now my skeleton’s a lot easier to work with, it should be cross-browser compatibility a much easier bear to wrestle.

And there are multiple viewports. Also buggy, but the skeleton’s there, and I’m happy with it. The website looks fresh in mobile and retro 800 pixel monitors/viewports(iPad). Way better than the previous iteration.

Plenty more if you’ve got a keen eye, check it out!

Stay regular super stoners~

I was looking at someone else’s CSS code

And I noticed a distinct difference between our styles.

I came from an object orientated, application programming background.

And he had to come from a front-end direction.

My code was more progressive.

But his was more streamlined.

Tabs done

Only took 2 months for me to finally do it.

God damn I’m a lazy developer.

Until I get serious.

Surprising Progress

I’ve been tinkering around with the WPD theme and getting some surprisingly positive results.

A number of CSS styles were added, fixed, and sorted. Pages look nice now, as well as the Strain DB. I’m incorporating different hover states for elements, so when a user hovers over a button, it’ll ‘pop up’ slightly to react. I’m hoping to give the site a fun face-lift, so stoners are more inclined to interact with the elements on the page.

Added an accordion-style(think Apple.com) animated menu on the sidebar. Again, placed for more interactivity and also to stuff in even more links. Popular tags are now displayed, may be switched to “trending tags” later.

Also considering a “High Resolution” version of WPD for the 1200+ pixel browsers. Very stretchy to say the least. But should also be much more efficient to look at, rather than scrolling needlessly.

And the final note for the night are tabs on the frontpage. I’m finally going to add a tabbed interface to the “featured articles” area, users won’t have to scroll at all to check out the weed porn.

I’m pretty sure I forgot plenty more, I’ll remember it looking through my code tonight :p

Stay tuned super stoners~

Lyric sites

Implement not only Javascript(to disable right-clicking or selecting text), but now they call their content into frames so you can’t look at the HTML to copy it.

Jesus fucking christ, you’d think they owned these lyrics or something.

Finally getting to optimizing WPD for different viewports. The first to play with was the more obvious choice, the mobile resolution. The experience should be much more enjoyable, and easier for touch application.
